Formed while Paul Winter was a student at Northwestern University in Chicago, the Paul Winter Sextet won the Intercollegiate Jazz Festival, held at Georgetown Universty, in May 1961. The judges at the Jazz Festival were Dizzy Gillespie and John Hammond. John Hammond signed the group to a recording contract with Columbia, which resulted in 5 albums.
In 1962, the Sextet became the first group to be sent abroad under the cultural exchange program sponsored by the US State Department when it was selected for a tour of Latin America for President Kennedy's Cultural Exchange Program. The six-month tour of 160 concerts in 23 countries was horizon-expanding, introducing the musicians to new music and, in particular, to the bossa nova music which was just emerging in Brazil. In the same year, the Paul Winter Sextet became the first jazz group to perform at the White House, invited by Jackie Kennedy.
