BRAZILIAN DAYS, Winter's most recent Brazilian recording
Paul Winter first visited Brazil in 1962, when the Paul Winter Sextet made a six-month tour of 23-countries of Latin America for US State Department. The success of that tour brought an invitation from Jackie Kennedy to play at the White House. The impact made on the Sextet by the bossa nova music of Brazil is reflected in their first Columbia recording, JAZZ MEETS THE BOSSA NOVA, which became a minor hit.
During that first visit, Winter met Carlos Lyra, an exceptionally rich lyrical composer and singer who was at the forefront of the new musical development in Brazil. In 1965 and 1966, Paul returned to Brazil, living in Rio de Janeiro.
Paul Winter's two early Brazilian albums, SOUND OF IPANEMA with Carlos Lyra and RIO with Luiz Bonfa, Roberto Menescal, and the Tamba Trio, were born out of these periods he spent in Brazil at a special time when the music called 'new touch' or Bossa Nova was emerging.
