1970'S

1980's

1980: As part of his vision to bridge with music the gap between spirituality and ecology, The Very Reverend James Parks Morton invites Paul Winter and members of his Consort to become artists-in-residence at the world's largest Gothic cathedral, St. John the Divine, in New York. Paul Winter founds the Living Music record label with CALLINGS, a celebration of the ocean realm, as its first release. The label's primary intentions are to strive towards timeless music; to record in natural acoustic spaces; and to create a catalogue which embraces the vital traditions of music the label's musicians revere, from Bach to Africa, and cello to wolves.

1981: The MISSA GAIA, an ecological and ecumenical Mass, is premiered in New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine on Mother's Day, 10 May, celebrating Mother Earth, with a sermon by David Brower, founder and president of Friends of the Earth. It is recorded later in the year.
