Words and music by Pete Seeger
© Stormking Music Inc.

  • Pete Seeger - voice, banjo
  • Paul Prestopino - banjo
  • David Finke- bass
  • Gordon Gottlieb - triangle
  • Gaudeamus - chorus

These new words to a traditional song occured to me one day - it just sort of wrote itself - and in a few hours I'd got the verses set. It was such an easy song to write, I was surprised to find how usable it is. I've known the tune practically all my life - I think it was in my school songbook. The "original" song was "Weel May The Keel Row" ("Well May The Boat Row") from Newcastle-on-Tyne, northeast England. Different rhythm.
