Listen to a Clip (736K) Music by Ludwig van Beethoven ("Ode to Joy", 1826) Banjo arrangement by Pete Seeger, 1958 © 1933 by Sanga Music, Inc. English lyrics by Don West. Melody from Petrouchka. 1st verse: "Brother, Sing Your Country's Anthem" Pete Seeger - banjo, whistling, voice, 12-string guitar PETE SEEGER ON 'RUSSIAN SONG/ODE TO JOY'"For a banjo to attempt a tune written for a symphony is a kind of translation. For half a century I've played, mainly for my own amazement, a couple of Beethoven melodies. One part is from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony; the other is the famous two-part melody in his Seventh. Working with some choruses, and thinking how hard it's been for men and women to work together, black and white, Asian and Western, Arab and Jew etc - I worked out these short lyrics. Don West, the Appalachian radical, wrote three or four verses to "Ode to Joy", but some of them sounded too full of cliches, so I sing just one. I changed five words in the third verse, and I'm proud of them."
