Pianist Denny Zeitlin is a widely recorded and acclaimed composer, performer and improviser who is also a practicing psychiatrist. He brings his heart and his virtuosity together in HOMECOMING for Living Music. Born in Chicago, and playing piano from his earliest years, Zeitlin's first years as a professional coincided with a unique and exciting ferment in the Chicago music scene, giving this talented teenager an invaluable informal apprenticeship sitting in with the likes of Joe Farrell, Wes Montgomery and Ira Sullivan. While still in medical school, Zeitlin was introduced by Paul Winter to John Hammond, the legendary producer and talent scout. Hammond signed Zeitlin to Columbia in 1963. Zeitlin's early Columbia albums were greeted with excitement: critic Leonard Feather termed Zeitlin "the most versatile young pianist to come to prominence in the early 1960's". In the mid-1960's, Zeitlin began pioneering work in the integration of electronic and acoustic music. This work culminated in his composing and performing the acclaimed score for the 1978 film INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, which brought together his interests in orchestral scoring, electronic and prepared keyboards, and acoustic piano. Denny Zeitlin's HOMECOMING celebrates his earliest and deepest musical roots: the solo acoustic piano. Co-producer Paul Winter worked closely with his friend of more than 20 years to bring out the most lyrical, heartfelt qualities of Zeitlin's music. The result is more than simply an outstanding album in Denny Zeitlin's acclaimed list of musical accomplishments; it is a spirited, flowing work which will be embraced by longtime fans and new audiences alike. "Zeitlin's piano is impeccable...introspective, filled with joy, bitingly mocking, always intelligent and emotional" (Downbeat) "..he can rip the keyboard apart or coax the most delicate nuances from it with a virtuoso's assurance. And it is done not as showmanship, but as a means to a distinctly creative end" (HIGH FIDELITY) "Zeitlin is creating some of the most stimulating jazz of our time".(SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER) ![]()
